DSK at WP Court Competition Finals

On Saturday 14 April 2012, Marcus Schaefer and Laura Andreas represented the DSK as provincial finalists in the Constitutional Moot Court Competition.
Having entered the competition in November 2011, Marcus and Laura prepared written submissions to the Moot High Court in January 2012.  They presented both sides of the case of a minor, Deneo, who was applying to the court to have a decision by the Department of Social Development overturned.  There were many angles to the case, but simply stated, the 15 year old Deneo was seeking to become the head of a household and take parental responsibility for her junior siblings, following the death of her mother.
The court, impressed with the written submissions by Marcus and Laura, invited the DSK to present  them at the provincial finals, along with 8 other schools.  The four WP finalists would then be invited to attend the Constitutional Court in Johannesburg to present their case.
The doors of the Magistrates Court in Cape Town were opened to the finalists at 8 am. Marcus and Laura, under the watchful eye of Ms Ball, entered Court Room 2 to debate the merits of their case in front of a panel of Advocates, Attorneys and Judges.   With Laura and Marcus gowned and seated, the Moot Court started.  During the morning session, the DSK duo campaigned against the court recognising Deneo as the head of a household, and the Department of Social Development be supported. In the afternoon they had to present the reverse; they pleaded that the ‘exceptional circumstances’ be recognised, and that the minor be allowed to keep the family together.  Their case was made up of long, meticulous and detailed research on the Constitution, the Convention on the Rights of a Child, the Bill of Rights and previous cases.
Marcus and Laura spoke brilliantly- they were factual, articulate, credible, calm and professional.  They did the DSK proud and the hours of work paid off handsomely.  Sadly, on this occasion, they did not make the South African finals in Johannesburg, but they have established a benchmark for others to follow.
The school would like to take this opportunity to salute Laura and Marcus on a commendable performance and to thank Advocates Anton Katz and David Borgstrom for giving up valuable time to advise the students. (Lorraine Schaefer)

German Seal of Excellence Award Ceremony

Provincial Minister of Education, Donald Grant, and Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport and International Relations, Dr Ivan Meyer, attended the award ceremony at the DSK at which the seal of excellence, signed by the Federal President of Germany, was handed to the Principal, Mr Hermann Battenberg by the German Consul-General, Mr Hans-Werner Bussmann.

In his speech Minister Grant praised the school, which endorsed the provincial government’s belief in an open opportunity society, allowing parents to exercise choice when selecting a school for their children.
The seal of excellence, earned by years of preparation towards the improvement of the DSK, was awarded after an inspection by German government officials in April.

Minister Dr Meyer (download speech) then emphasised that the Deutsche Internationale Schule Kapstadt was founded in 1883 - a century when child labour was still the order of the day, “but today”, he said,  “the DSK is a pocket of success in the Western Cape.” He appreciated the values on which the seal of excellence had been awarded: quality, values, diversity!
